Introduction to Monetizing
When it comes to monetizing your site, there is no shortage of things you can sell online but to help focus our approach we can break it down into two general buckets:
- Marketing Services
Advertising/Promotion consists of things like:
- Print Ads
- Banner Ads
- Email Newsletter Sponsorships
- Social Promotions/Contests
- Native Advertising
- Sponsored Content/Advertorials
- Business Directory Listings/Guides
- Featured Events
- Audience Targeting
- And many, many more...
Marketing Service options include:
- Mobile Websites
- Listings Management
- Reputation Management/Reviews
- Business Blogging
- Social Media Services
- Email Marketing Services
- Pay-per-Click (PPC) on Google and Facebook
- Ecommerce Marketing
- And many more...
So where do we start?
While most publishers are more focused on advertising and promotion, we encourage you to also go through the Marketing Services section of this course to understand why you need to, at the very least, be aware of these other online options and be able to talk to advertisers about marketing services.
But we digress...
Since advertising and promotion IS the bread and butter of most publishers we will focus on that for now but even that list can be daunting if you try to do it all at once.
For that reason, we will focus on the things you can sell that deliver immediate revenue for you and value for your advertisers.
You can add $2,000 per month in recurring revenue with Community Sponsors and on to $40k or more in annual revenue by following our Digital Sales Plan. We recommend you review this link and discuss with your team to pick your top priorities.
Once you've established a solid foundation, you can reinvest in your online presence to produce more content, do more promotion on social media and email, and layer on additional revenue from things like Sponsored Content (covered in the last chapter of this section) and Marketing Services.
You can use this Digital Sales Inventory Worksheet to track your progress towards these goals.
